Glaciers

Iceland has hundreds of glaciers covering over 10% of its land mass, the largest being Vatnajokull covering over 3000 square miles. Some companies provide excursions to glaciers for tourists to explore but simply being close enough to take in the sheer vastness of a glacier will leave you with long lasting memories. They’re also great subjects for landscape photography.

Crystal clear ice on a black sand beach known as Diamond Beach.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach situated close to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a black sand beach littered with ice fragments washed up from the lagoon. The nick-name Diamond Beach was given by tourists due to the contrast of the crystal-clear ice on the pitch-black sand and the name stuck. Diamond Beach is a must-see for all thinking of visiting Iceland.

Glacier ice floating in a lagoon

The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is just as stunning as Diamond Beach and is another major tourist attraction. Glacial ice breaks off into the lagoon and drifts out to sea. You can see layers of ash in some of the ice from historic eruptions. Again, this is a great place for photography.
